Delivered food safety: receiving and storing meals

Check the meal when it is handed over

Inspect the container, storage information and stated use-by date on arrival. Chilled food needs suitable cold storage promptly; an insulated bag is not a refrigerator. Contact the supplier before eating if packaging leaks, temperature control appears compromised or essential information is missing. Smell alone cannot establish that a delivered dish is safe to consume.

Follow the instructions for the particular dish

Reheating, storage after opening and container-use instructions depend on the product. Keep the label until the meal has been eaten and avoid handling that mixes raw ingredients with cooked food. Where the recipient cannot put dishes away, arrange help at the handover. Do not serve a meal if a safety concern remains unresolved after checking with the supplier.
